Naprotiv, suvremene subdiscipline, poput urbane antropologije, konceptualiziraju grad kao proces, naglašavajući aspekte fluidnosti, nedovršenosti i promjenjivosti i konstitutivnu ulogu pojedinca i zajednice.[1] Grad se, naime, kroz svakodnevne i prostorne prakse njegovih stanovnika, stalno iznova uspostavlja, mijenjajući odnose semantičkih, simboličkih, ekonomskih, političkih, prostornih i drugih slojeva. To stalno re-konstruiranje grada izmiče gabaritima zacrtanim, s jedne strane materijalnim granicama arhitekture, a s druge ideologijom, čineći ga dinamičnom, heterogenom i nedovršenom, a time i stalno otvorenom, strukturom.

“Time Regained – a photo album of the city district of Peščenica” by Slovenian artist Anja Medved is an art and documentary project with which the author thematises the city district as an intersection of architecture, public utilities, and collective and intimate memories. Upon invitation by the author, the residents of the district are bringing their photographs that serve as the base for the exhibition, discussion, and subsequent joint production in the second phase of the project in 2019.

Anja Medved / Time Regained– a photo album of the district of Peščenica
Exhibition, artist talk, and screening of the documentary film “Town in a Meadow” by Anja Medved and Nadja Velušček, produced by Kinoatelje in 2004. “Town in a Meadow” is a documentary film about the town of Nova Gorica in Slovenia, which came into existence in 1947 by political decree following the annexation of the Primorska region to Yugoslavia.

“In the realm of social theories, architecture has long since ceased to be considered an autonomous discipline, and the town a structure exclusively defined by architecture and urban planning. Quite the contrary, contemporary disciplines such as urban anthropology conceptualise the town as process, highlighting the aspects of fluidity, incompletion, variability, and the constitutive role of the individual and the community. [1] Specifically, the town is continuously re-established through the everyday and spatial practices of its inhabitants, thus changing the relationships between semantic, symbolic, economic, political, spatial, and other layers. This continuous re-establishment of the town eludes the dimensions mapped out by material boundaries of architecture on the one hand, and by ideology on the other hand, thus making it a dynamic, heterogenous and incomplete, and therefore also a continuously open structure. This is also the starting point from which visual artist and documentarist Anja Medved approaches the work “Time Regained– a photo album of the district of Peščenica.” By thematising marginal urban space, i.e. the transition of town periphery from the non-structured and rural area to the urban zone, Anja Medved has reached for the residents’ private photographs, thus creating a base for a common archive in which personal views, particular selections, and fragments of different histories will become equivalent segments of common history. The residents have been invited to reconstruct it, to mark own locations and time, and to recognise traces of own memories in those of the others. The recorded fragments of gone-by times reveal former spatial configurations and practises that had formed them. Enlarged to the dimensions that are no longer intimate and no longer fit in pockets, wallets, albums, or shoeboxes – a kind of pre-digital archives – and subsequently displayed in full format on gallery windows, they become a physical sign in space, a clear boundary of unclear relationships. Are these photographs now private or communal? Does the presented stratified space, even when appropriated in different manners, always remain the same? Which and whose history are they building?” (From the foreword by Irena Bekić)

The idea was to make “something big that will shine over the border”. People started to move in from all over Yugoslavia but after few years this prominent project run out of money. For years Nova Gorica was a half finished skeleton in a meadow by an immensely wide street which led nowhere. The new inhabitants soon realized that they will have to build the town by themselves. Although the idea of the modern green town somehow survived and is still present in a huge meadow in the centre that reminds us of the empty space that the town once occupied, not much of the original plan remained. The documentary collects the memories of first inhabitants and constructors of Nova Gorica, conceived in 1947 by one of the most important modernist architects in Yugoslavia - Edvard Ravnikar. The film tells the story of the origins and asks questions about identity and vision of the town in a time when border, which led to its creation, started to disappear. Statement of authors “Towns are places of exchange. Not only of goods but also of memories, stories and desires. Thanks to these, all towns are different and irreplaceable.
