The Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday is held to observe the birthday of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

January 20, 2014 marks the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday as a national day of service, calling Americans from every walk of life to help realize King's vision of a "beloved community" by volunteering their time and effort to help others.  The MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – "a day on, not a day off." (In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service.)
