Gordana Medunić, Associate Professor of Environmental Geochemistry at the Faculty of Science, Department of Geology (University of Zagreb) will give a travel lecture entitled Travel Geologist - From the U.S. to India and Thailand.

Geology is an exciting science field which draws from multiple scientific fields and academic disciplines such as biology, geography, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and medicine. As a geologist, Professor Medunić has also been able to travel widely, from the USA, Spain and Japan to India and Thailand to participate in scientific conferernces and workshops as part of collaboration  on international projects. This travel lecture will give an insight into the highlights of geology and science in general.

In her research Professor Medunić focuses on coal-derived pollution of a vulnerable karstic coastal area  in Croatia (Raša, Istria, the Northern Adriatic Sea). Local terra rossa soil is polluted with sulfur, selenium, trace metals, radionuclides, and organic contaminants. Local Raša coal mines were exploited from the 18th century till late 1990s. Raša coal is a one-of-a-kind coal, due to exceptionally high values of S (up to 14%), which is present mostly in organic form.
