Lights, Cheer, and Black Friday: US Holiday Traditions

The talk will cover Christmas and New Year's traditions across the United States.  Topics will include the celebrations of Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa, classic holiday songs and movies that will be heard and seen across the US, the importance of giving to
communities and observance for American soldiers overseas, holiday foods and feasts, New Years in NYC, and of course, the famous (or infamous) Black Friday rush.

Sean Turner, a Master's student in the Department of Geographical Sciences of the University of Maryland, has been awarded a 2016-2017 Fulbright Grant for study in Croatia. His project is entitled, "Gap Analysis of Croatian Island Development Strategies: Contextualizing Policy Creation and Outcomes".
Sean's research will focus on measuring the performance of island development strategies for the Republic of Croatia.
Working with Dr. Nenad Starc of the Institute of Economics and Dr. Ivo Nejašmić of the University of Zagreb, Turner will specifically look at how this population has evolved since the Croatia’s independence in 1992.
